Material Tests

Sophia with the “wall of surface tests”

As an artist who purposefully utilizes found and raw materials, Walcott was interested in expanding her knowledge of constructed surfaces. Attention to surface will add variety and professionalism to her portfolio and expand her ability to create work for public spaces.

The project began with a series of tests on various surface enhancement techniques inspired by the work of multiple sculptors. Once a process was identified and materials acquired, we emulated and experimented with the material possibilities. The surface categories were developed by recording the results from these experiments and documenting the changes to the object or sculpture when the new surface was applied. Additionally, we completed a one day workshop at Chicago Crucible where were learned about metal patinas and how to apply them.

Workshop at Chicago Crucible

At Chicago Crucible in Hamilton, MI, Walcott and Funston completed a day-long patina workshop where we worked with Lloyd Mandelbaum to prep and apply patinas to aluminum, steel, and bronze surfaces.
