Mon. June 3
Used fiberglass mesh for cut outs. tried spray paint to see what would happen to the optical illusion. I think I like the natural look of the mesh the best. I am more interested in the shadows and surface of the piece rather than the forms, unlike the paper pieces where the form is the focus.
Tues. June 4
Went to Chicago. Saw Agora Big Feet by Magdalena Abakanowicz; large public sculpture made from cast iron. I enjoyed the texture of the cast burlap and wrinkled material. It appeared almost like a bandage or wrapping. The wrinkles also gave the appearance of windswept movement.
Victoria Martinez: Braiding Histories at Chicago Cultural Center
Her use fabric to play w/ transparency vs opacity is interesting. She used different types of paint; acrylic, pigments, and fiber paste to create texture and luminosity.
Projection as a constructed surface
Wed. June 5
Worked on the code book and draft for presentation.
Applied latex/silk to metal pipe
Applied white glue/silk to metal pipe- it peeled off very easily and molded to the texture of the pipe. The side that was touching the pipe is smooth and glossy.
Thurs. June 6/ Friday 7
Started a new piece by putting latex, plaster and wax on top of fiberglass mesh. I just wanted to start applying the materials to a possible sculpture so I let it kind of be a hodgepodge of materials and textures. The mesh doesn’t absorb anything so its a nice challenge to find ways to get the materials to stick to another and not crack off.
Did some more artist research for possible tests and research for what to see at the art institute.
